Climate and Travel Seasons

uhan belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate, and the four seasons there are clear-cut, with extreme temperatures dominating both summer and winter here.

The summer here is almost unbearable. Wuhan is one of China's "Three Furnaces" (the other two being Nanjing and Chongqing), with an intensely hot and dry heat and temperatures averaging about 32 degrees Centigrade in June, July and August. The heat also feels like it will last for eternity, with spells lasting for weeks on end and little difference in temperature between day and night. Although rainfall is fairly high at this time, it provides little respite from the city heat.

The winter here is also pretty unpleasant with minimum temperatures in January and February of 1 or 2 degrees Centigrade. The frost free period is about 220-250 days, annual average temperature is 16C.The best time to visit this "furnace" is autumn, when temperatures are much more manageable and there is less rainfall than at other times of the year.
