Sichuan

Located in southwest China on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Sichuan Province, abbreviated as Chuan or Shu, has an area of 48 square kilometers and a population of 83.29 million composed of Hans, Yis, Tibetans, Huis, Qiangs and other ethic people. Chengdu is the provincial capital.

The eastern part of the province is the Sichun Basin with an altitude of 500 meters, and the west plateau is at an elevation from 3000 meters to 4000 meters above sea level. Having a vast territory and multiplex climate, Sichuan's agriculture is flourishing and reputed as "the Natural Storehouse"
Sichuan is endowed with rich resources of tourism. The province is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and many historical and cultural sites. There are 9 national scenic resorts and 7 national famous historical and cultural cities in Sichuan. Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, Mount Qingcheng, Giant Buddha of Leshan, Mount Emei, Jiuzhaigou Valleya and Huanglong scenic areas have been inscribed on the World Heritage list by the UNESCO. Other key tourist spots are Du Fu's Thatched Cottage, Marquis of Wu's Temple, Wenshuyuan Monas-tery Museam, Daocheng Scenic Area, Jianmen Pass, Bamboo Sea in south Sichuan, and Conch Gully.

Dujiangyan Irrigation Profect and Mount Qingcheng
Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, the long established water conservation works, is located at Dujiangyan City lying in the upper reaches of Minjiang River, which is the longest tributary of Yangtze River. During the Warring States Period (475BC-221BC), Li Bing, a governor of Shu in the Qin State, directed the construction of Dujiangyan Weir. For more than two thousand years the whole system has functioned perfectly, serving as not only as flood prevention but also as an immense source for irrigation as well as a means to facilitate shipping and wood drifting. Mount Qingcheng, southwest to Dujianyan City, is one of the birthplaces of Taoism. It boasts 36 peaks, 8 big caves, 72 lesser caves and 108 scenic spots, as well as 11 Taoism monasteries and temples. In 2000, Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mount Qingcheng were both inscribed on the on the World Heritage List by the UNESCO.

Leshan Giant Buddha
The Giant Buddha sites on the eastern bank of the Minjiang River and on the western bank of the Minjiang River and on the western slope of Lingyun Hill. With the height of 70.7 meters, it is one of the largest stone sculptures of Buddha in the world. The construction of the statue began in 713, during the first year of the Emperor Xuanzong's reign period of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and completed in the 19th year of Emperor Dezong (803), a total of 90 years. Taking the shape of a Maitreye, the gigantic stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below his feet. In 1996, it became a world cultural heritage site by the UNESCO.

Huanglong Scenic Area
Situated in Songpan County of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, the Huanglong Scenic Area consists of two parts: Huanglong and Mouni Gully. The area possesses various huge and exotic landscapes, such as the magnificent mountains, precipitous valleys, splendid grassland scenery, vast sea of forest, plenty of lakes, rich animal-plant resources, and unique folk customs, and these marvelous scenes are quite spectaculars. In 1992, the Huanglong Scenic Area became one of world natural heritage sites of the UNESCO.

Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic Area
Locating in Songpan County of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture, Jiuzhaigou Valley is reputed as a "Fairyland". An integration of green lakes, multi-layered waterfalls, forests and snow-mountains with Tibetan culture and customs, it becomes a well-known scenic area. The water of jiuzhaigou Valley is widely known for its crystal clearness, pure transparency and rich colors. There are rich forest resources here, and many kinds of rare animals such as giant panda, snub-nosed monkey, and swan are living here. In 1992, UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List.

Mount Emei Scenic Area
Mount Emei lies in the southern area of Sichuan basin, 150 kilometers away from Chengdu. It is one of the four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China, known as the place of Buddhist Rites of Puxian (Samantabhadra Bodhisattva). The whole mountain covers an area of 300 square kilometers. Wanfoding (Summit of Ten-Thousand Buddha), the main peak of Mount Emei, is 3099 meters in elevation. It is rich in natural and cultural resource and carries several monikers: "Kingdom of Plant", "Paradise of the title". The four wonders of Mount Emei are Golden Summit Sunrise, Sea of Cloud, Buddha's Halo and the Holy Lamp. The main attractions include Wanfoding, Baoguo Temple, Fuhu Temple, Wannian Temple and many other spots. In 1996, the UNESCO inscribed it on the List of World Heritage.
 
Du Fu's Thached Cottage
Located on the side of the Flower-Washing Brook in the western suburbs of Chengdu, it is the former residence of the celebrated Tang Dynasty poet, Du Fu (712-770), born in Gongyi City, Hennan Province, fled to Chengdu where he built a humble cottage and stayed for about four years. During these years, he composed more than 240 poems reflecting upon the misery of people, including one of his masterpieces. "The Song of Autumn Winds Destroying My Cottage", In this poem, he expresses his anxiety for the plight of other poverty-stricken scholars and the desire for shelter for all the poor. Most of the present buildings were constructed in the Qing dynasties.

Bamboo Sea in South of Sichuan
The Bamboo Sea sprawls on the border of Changning and jiang'an counties in Yibin. It is the only major scenic area in the country proclaimed by the State Council stressed on bamboo scenery. 28 peaks scatter over the 120-square-kilometers area. The entire area is, as its name suggests, a vast stretch of bamboo groves. There are above 30 kinds of bamboos such as Nan Bamboo. Flower Bomboo, Cotton and so on. The air is fresh, while streams run with a rich susurrus, and waterfalls tumble and splash—all these qualify the Bamboo Sea as an ideal bio-tourist destination. In a boundless expanse of green waves there are a lot of scenic spots, such as Heavenly Emperor Temple, Arhat Cave, Heavenly Palace, and Pavilion of Viewing Cloud and so on.
