Sera Monastery

Sera Monastery
Sera Monastery is one of the three most famous monasteries in Lhasa. It is located at the southern slope of the Serawoze Mountain in the northern suburbs of Lhasa. It was built in 1419 by Sagya Yeshes, one of the eight disciples of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Ge-lug-pa Sect. Covering an area of 114,964 square meters, the structure is imposing and splendid in green and gold. It is typical of Tibetan architecture. The Sera Monastery has a rich collection of cultural relics. The Monastery owns a silk tangka painting of Sagya Yeshes, which was a gift from Emperor Yongle. Although 500 years have lapsed, the painting still looks bright as it was first made.
